THE Accra East Divisional Police has arrested 40 suspected criminals in a raid to rid the Teshie Nungua Estates and its environs of criminal elements.
Among the 40 were six suspected armed robbers, one suspected GT cable thief and the rest suspected drug peddlers and wee smokers.
Items found during the operation were cutlasses, large quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, knives, cutters, crowbar, penicillin and amoxyceline tablets, a generator, mobile phones, DVD and VCD players, a fridge and suitcases.
Deputy Superintendent of Police, Elizabeth Dassah of the Accra East Divisional Police told the Daily Graphic in an interview that the raid was part of their policy to make the community safe prior to the 2008 elections in December.
“ Elections has its own challenges and in line with that we have been mounting swoops at criminal dens, organising mobile patrols in the night and snap checks on vehicles and suspicious people,” she stated.
In one of the swoops, she said the Nungua Police had information that a notorious armed robbery syndicate, part of which lived at Teshie had in their possession a double barrelled gun and cartridges which they used for robbery operations.
“A part of the syndicate was led by one Nana Akuffo at Teshie and the other part was led by another ring leader, Danso who lived at Nungua”, she added.
DSP Dassah noted that the police in their investigations located the hideout of Nana Akuffo but was not found so his younger brother Moses Akuffo, believed to be part of the syndicate, was however present and was arrested to assist in investigations.
According to DSP Dassah, Moses Akuffo led the police to Nungua-Kantamanto where Danso lived.
“ Danso was also not around but a search was conducted in his room in the presence of his girlfriend and the double barrelled gun with 13 live cartridges were retrieved”.
She stated that further information from the public led to the arrest of two suspects, Emmanuel Bortey and Isaac Afotey, also believed to be a members of the syndicate.
“All the suspects have been arraigned before the La District Magistrate Court and are currently on court bail in the sum of GH¢1000 each with one surety” she added noting that a duplicate docket was being forwarded to the Attorney General’s Department for advice.
In related encounter, DSP Dassah revealed that one out of six armed robbers who attacked two complainants, Kweku Ansah and Samuel Dzormeku and robbed them of GH¢1,016 and Nokia phone valued at GH¢200 was in their custody.
She entreated all victims of armed robbery within and around the Teshie municipality to go and inspect if any of the stolen items belonged to them noting that “our complements goes out to the general public who are forthcoming with infomation that led to the arrest of these criminals”.
