Maths Training Ends

Mathematics training programme ends
A GRADUATION ceremony has been held for thirteen students from primary, junior and senior high schools who have undergone a two-week Mathematics training programme under the Meagasa Education’s Mathematics Academy programme.
The programme was organised by Mathematics for National Education and Development (MathNED), a non-governmental organisation (NGO), and it aims at providing a forum for all students to discuss issues involving the state of Mathematics education in the country.
The students were camped at Lashibi, near Accra, where they were taken through activity based exercises to polish their knowledge and potential in Mathematics.
The Executive Director of the Academy, Professor Sitsofe E. Anku, said Mathematics education ensured the efficiency of everything that one did when the principles involved were applied appropriately, adding that maths was related to all aspects of human endeavours.
“Maths is not only learnt to pass exams but also to make money and exhibit creativity”, he noted.
He said kids in recent times were afraid to learn Mathematics, explaining that the problem with it was not the subject itself but the way it was taught.
“Presently, there is no area of human endeavour without the applications of Mathematics, he noted, adding that mathematics was needed in our every day lives.”
He said many students could not perform well in mathematics examination because they were taught only on blackboards from which they copied and passed without acquiring the basic skills in knowledge creation.
He advised the students to learn through team work and endeavour to rekindle their interest in Mathematics.
The Assistant Director of the Academy, Mr Seth K. Akrobotu, said the camp was set up to train students according to standards set by the Ghana Education Service (GES), through activity based exercises.
He hinted that most students who went through the programme often came back to testify about how they had improved their performance.
Some of the students expressed their appreciation for the two-week intensive programme which had improved their skills in Mathematics.
“We have benefited a lot from the programme and would recommend it to students who find it difficult working Mathematics under the school curriculum”, they said.
