THE government is to upgrade infrastructure at Kokompe and Abossey Okai in Accra and the Suame Magazine industrial site in Kumasi to enhance their contribution to the industrialisation of the country.
The support include the provision of street lights, accessible roads and easy access to funds to these industrial sites who mainly engage in the retailing of car spare parts, remodelling of broken-down vehicles and the manufacture of basic industrial tools and equipment.
A Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and President’s Special Initiatives, Mrs Shirley Ayokor Botchwey, made this known when she visited mechanics at the Kokompe Industrial site in Accra to acquaint herself with their work.
She admitted that these industrial sites had the potential to spearhead the country’s industrialisation process because they were full of human resources that could positively affect society if given the needed boost.
She said her ministry would provide funds to improve on infrastructure in these sites to help rejuvenate the metal work industry to the benefit of the country.
That, she noted, would create an enabling environment for all small and medium-scale businesses in and around those sites to thrive and enable them to contribute their quota to the national economy.
Concerns raised by the mechanics were access to potable water, accessible roads, sanitation and the unavailability of street lights among others.
The Deputy Minister promised that her ministry would collaborate with the Energy Ministry to provide street lights for them and also help address some of their concerns.
She said the Kokompe site would be moved from Darkuman to Anyaa, a suburb of Accra, but till then plans were in place to provide them with the needed infrastructure.
The Zoomlion Zonal Supervisor for Accra, Mr Robert Coleman, pledged the constant support of Zoomlion to curb the problem of sanitation in the area through the provision of waste tanks and the daily collection of waste.
